BRIEFING NOTE:  SUTTON LANE ROAD SAFETY SCHEME

Since the previous update in June, excellent progress has been made with this project.

Following agreement of the design between NYCC and BMDC the proposals were made public on Friday 10 June with a public engagement exercise held in Sutton in Craven community centre on 21 June allowing residents of both Sutton in Craven and Eastburn the opportunity to speak with engineers about the proposals.

Pleasingly, the proposals were well received by the respective communities and there is an understanding that the intention remains to acquire land to provide footways along the entire length of Sutton Lane, when possible.  Members of both authorities will continue to engage with the respective local landowners regarding the purchase or acquisition of adjoining land for the footways. The proposals do all they can to improve safety in the meantime.

On the basis the proposals were well received, it was possible to deliver the carriageway resurfacing and road markings element of the scheme very quickly and this work was completed on 5 July.  The resurfacing work maximises the available width of carriageway for pedestrians and drivers by removing vegetation growth on the edge and will be subject to regular weed control to ensure this is maintained.  The introduction of an edge of carriageway road marking also provides a better guide of the live traffic lane.

The new and improved signing on the NYCC section of Sutton Lane has also been installed along with the street lighting timing amended to provide illumination during all hours of darkness.

The work on the BMDC section of Sutton Lane is in the process of being procured with a provisional start date of 19 September to commence on site.

May this opportunity be used to thank Cllr Philip Barrett and Elected Members of BMDC and Craven District Council, all of whom have very supportive in the development of proposals and working in partnership to achieve the best outcome for the Sutton in Craven and Eastburn communities, given the tragic circumstances that have led to this intervention.
